I scream. You scream. We all scream for ice cream. I love ice cream, but only if it is really, really good ice cream…oh, and only if there are super unique flavors. Sorry, vanilla and chocolate!

If you are going to get a cone on a hot summer’s day, it may as well be amazing, right? My love for ice cream extends beyond Boston to every new city and country we visit. In Portland, Oregon as well as in San Francisco, my ice cream obsession led us to wait in line for 30 minutes because I had to try each city’s “best” ice cream (hello, Salt & Straw and Bi-Rite Creamery), and in Rome, we wandered forever to find what I had read was the “best” gelato. #IceCreamSnob

Lucky for me, Boston has some terrific options for ice cream; so, the next time you need a frozen fix, these flavors are worth the calories!

The A-Lyst for Splurge-Worthy Ice Cream in Boston

FoMuFoMu

Don’t be fooled by the fact that this ice cream is “vegan.” When you taste one of FoMu’s coconut milk-based flavors, you won’t know the difference…they’re THAT good! Not only can those with an intolerance to milk rejoice, but all ice cream lovers should be ecstatic about the shop’s ridiculously good seasonal flavors (think Lavender and Blueberry Shortbread). The local company is rapidly expanding and I love their new South End location! 655 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02118

Toscanini’s

Where do I even begin? Beyond having the coolest flavors in Boston, Toscanini’s ice cream is incredibly rich and delicious! The B3 flavor here is my ultimate ice cream pick (brown butter, brown sugar & brownie), but you can’t go wrong with any of their choices, including Green Tea, Burnt Caramel, Earl Gray, and Peanut Butter Banana Butterfinger. We love walking to this Central Square spot from Boston because the view across the Mass. Ave bridge is stunning, and well, let’s be honest, it makes you feel less guilty about your indulgence. 899 Main Street, Cambridge, MA 02139

Picco

While the flavors offered at this pizza and ice cream joint are fairly straightforward, they are all homemade and delicious. When I get a cone here, I often opt for Picco’s sorbet – the dark chocolate sorbet is amazing and pairs well with whatever fruit flavored sorbet they have that day. Although Picco is a full-service restaurant that is literally always busy, there is ice cream take-out available and it is very efficient! 513 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02118

Morano Gelato

If you find yourself venturing to the ‘burbs, this is hands down the best gelato in the Boston area. The perfect sweet ending for a shopping trip to Chestnut Hill, Morano offers the creamiest flavors, both classic and inventive, and top notch customer service (they will let you try as many flavors as you want!). 199 Boylston Street, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467

Boston’s local ice cream “chain” does not disappoint. Beyond offering creative monthly ice cream flavors like Blueberry Pancakes and Syrup, the shop also serves frozen hard yogurt, soft & tart flavored yogurt, and their very own coffee. There is really something for everyone! Locations across Boston
