I have a confession: I have a bit of an obsession with coats. Our small coat closet is filled to the brim – and then some – with all of my seasonal jackets. From puffy winter must-haves and classic furs, to cheerful trenches and the perfect autumn wool jackets, I can’t stop myself from buying MORE coats!
Not to justify my purchasing habits, but springtime weather in New England can be fickle, so it’s essential to have a few staple trenches and lightweight coats on hand. As the trees turn green again and the flowers begin to bloom, a pop of color to spring attire is always a welcome sight. Over the years, I’ve found some very beautiful solid color spring coats and I can’t tell you how many compliments I receive when I wear them!
After one too many March nor’easters, I decided to incorporate a floral trench into my wardrobe this spring. Surprisingly, both the color palette and pattern are very versatile, and it’s yet another coat that garners quite a bit of attention when I wear it!
If you’re on the hunt for a spring coat, I’ve shared my season’s top picks, all of which are perfect for the days when you need an extra layer!
The A-Lyst for the Best Spring Coats
I admit, I haven’t purchased anything by GUESS in a long time, but when I began searching online for floral print coats and this one popped up, I knew I had to have it. The light grey color against the fresh floral pattern is the perfect way to brighten up a gloomy April day and I love how the fabric is both super lightweight and durable (you can even machine wash it!). My usual way of wearing this trench is open, almost as extension of my outfit, but it looks equally as sharp when buttoned up and cinched at the waist with a tied belt. Fun/random fact: my screen name during the good ‘ole AOL days was GUESSGIRL070…I guess it’s true that old habits die hard!
Beyond its gorgeous blue hue, I adore the simple, chic silhouette of this coat, especially the pleats in the back! At a wallet-friendly price of $59, I couldn’t resist adding it to my coat collection. Since H&M’s sizing can be a bit off, I bought this piece in a size 4 and size 6 and found that the 4 was a perfect fit. I envision wearing this coat with everything from a cheerful floral-print dress to white pants and a printed blouse.
Lauren Ralph Lauren A-Line Trench Coat in Rosewood
I purchased this trench coat last spring in a cheerful bright yellow hue and am really trying to keep myself from ordering it in this year’s beautiful Rosewood color. Since this jacket doesn’t feature a belt and is worn more like a shift, I’d recommend sizing down, as it is definitely a bit boxy. For rainy days when I am running around the city doing errands, the detachable hood comes in handy and offers great coverage from the elements. The eye-catching color combined with its classic, straight shape make this Lauren Ralph Lauren number a staple to have in your spring wardrobe!
I am a sucker for anything and everything with ruffles, so when I found this Joie ruffled trench coat, I immediately fell in love with it. While standard trench khaki-colored coats can feel masculine and boring, the lovely feminine detail on this Joie coat is young, flirty, and stylish! I find that the detail at the shoulders is especially flattering for someone who is petite, as it adds the perfect amount of broadness to the upper part of your silhouette. I personally prefer to wear this jacket open, but I do love how the buttons are concealed when you button it on a chilly spring day.
J.Crew Perfect Rain Jacket in Pink Blush
Functional, casual, and yet still feminine, J.Crew’s spring rain jacket in the pink blush color is so popular that it can actually be a bit tricky to track down. In fact, within the first week of launching this coat, a sales associate told me that that store sold out of it! The water resistant fabric and hood are essential for April showers, while the drawstring bungee tie at the waist allows you to show off your figure. This is the perfect jacket to pack for a weekend getaway or throw on for an afternoon spent running around the neighborhood.
